DIY Detachable Studded Glitter Collar

So I eyed this post on rookiemag awhile ago on how to DIY decorate a detachable collar, and I've FINALLY gotten around to it. I tried the one under the section labeled "glitter patterns" because I basically eat glitter. Mmmm, glitter.

So here's the collar I cut off:
From an old collared shirt from the GAP!

And here are the materials I used:
I also added a darker blue glitter, not shown in the picture.
The fabric paint I used was Mod Podge for Fabric.  To paint on the glitter, I did what rookiemag said and mixed the fabric paint and glitter together, then slapped that onto the collar. At first, I started with a foam brush (in the picture), then moved to an old makeup brush I had. The foam brush just adsorbed all the glue and was hard to work with. I did waaaay more than the 3 coats rookiemag recommended - I didn't want much of the white color of the collar to show through.  After letting the collar dry for 24 hours, I added studs.

Here is the finished collar:
Whee!! So shiny! Sorry for the blurriness.
Are you ready for your close up, collar?!
The glitter actually came out a lot more matte than I would have preferred. I think this is because the Mod Podge Fabric paint that inevitably sits on top of the glitter isn't shiny. To get a very glittery look, I would recommend brushing glue onto the collar first and THEN sprinkling lots of glitter on top rather than mixing the glitter and fabric paint together. However, be warned, the glitter is more likely to fall off this way. An alternative might be to use Mod Podge Gloss paint rather than the Fabric version.

Here are pictures of the detachable collar being worn!
I feel so studly.
Don't touch my neck, I'll kill you!

Side view
On my lap.
I am undone! Or at least... the collar is unbuttoned.

The gold-rose spikes are pin-ons connected with chains that I got from ASOS, similar to this. I like wearing 'em with the detachable collar because then I can leave the collar unbuttoned, like in the last picture.

Lessons learned:
*Foam brushes are horrible for fabric glue. I guess I should have seen that one coming.
*Let glue dry between layers, or you'll get some glitter clumping.
*If you don't want the original color of the collar to show through, you'll have to put on a ton of layers or paint it with an acrylic first.
*If you want a super glittery collar, put the glue down first then sprinkle on the glitter, or use a glossy fabric paint.
*Don't forget painting the part around the button.

If you don't want to DIY a studded/spiky accessory yourself, I don't blame you. It did take a few hours to do. DON'T FRET, my pet. There are some really cool neck accessories out there, already done for you. Here are some of my favorites from Harlett:
A little touch of badass. Available here.
I love the geometry of this. Available here.
The spikes are perfectly placed! Available here.

If you buy anything from karmaloop, you can use rep code: PRILLAMON for an extra 20% off! Yes, I'm serious. Pretty sweet deal.

Let me know if you have any questions, are going to try this yourself, or buying something similar!

Springtime in Colorado!

Spring has sprung and I can tell from my allergies. Yay. But, on the bright side, I can break out all the Jason Wu for Target I bought! Yay!

Here's the JWu dress in all its glory:
Loooooove the pockets and the lace at the bottom!

And here it is with a dose of spring styling!

Dress: Jason Wu for Target
Shoes: Kelsi Dagger
Leggings: Tart
Purse: Mulberry for Target
Bracelet: Juicy Couture Charm Bracelet
Belt: Mettle Fair Trade

The gold belt is the bombshell belt from Mettle Fair Trade, which I've featured before. The bombshell belt is so cool - it is literally made from recycled bomb shell material, and is, of course, fair trade. It says on Mettle Fair Trade's website that their products are "produced in Cambodia within a small, not for profit income generation and skills training project owned by it's members." That is something I can get behind! I bought mine for 199.90 Australian dollars from Haute on High.

It's hard to find Jason Wu at your local Target any more, so here are some dress suggestions for getting the same look:
ASOS skater dress with open back, also in petite, now $25.07 ($32.23 for petite).

ASOS skater dress with cross back detail in blue, purple, or white, $35.81.

ASOS Skater Dress with Cut Out Shoulder in mint, nude, or navy, $28.65.

Basically, just search "fit flare" at ASOS. They have lots of options. Just make sure to choose your country's site at the top right corner so the sizing is proper. I love ASOS because of their free shipping and free return shipping, no minimum!

If you can't spring for the Mettle Fair Trade belt, you can get something similar.
Metal Plated Belt, $18.99. I might suggest sizing down because, from the pictures, it looks like it was meant to go around the hips instead of the waist. Not sure though.

Vintage gold belt, $45 on Etsy. Etsy has a lot of good options, so checking there is always a good time!

Warehouse also has a couple cute gold belts: option 1, option 2. eBay does as well - no links though, because options change so quickly.

So there. That's what I'm wearing this spring!

Check out ideeli and DIY your own waxed denim

If you didn't get the memo, colored jeans are in again this spring. Lucky for you, since they were in last spring you can get some pretty good deals on colored denim!

As usual, ideeli has some pretty awesome denim deals in their "denim divas" section.
All R.E.U.S.E. jeans, $39.99 at ideeli's "denim divas" section

If you don't know about R.E.U.S.E. jeans, they are an eco-friendly brand that use 80% recycled denim to make their jeans. That's right, you can feel good about supporting a brand with a moral conscience, unlike Apple and Foxconn. Check out the R.E.U.S.E. website sometime for more information about their commitment to sustainability.

In the same vein as colored jeans, waxed colored jeans are also super on-trend for the spring.
Lorna Buford, raindropsofsapphire.com in J Brand Coated Red Jeans

Of course, instead of spending a bank-breaking $270 on wax coated jeans, you can coat a pair of the $40 colored skinnies from ideeli with Otter Wax pretty easily! You can find an easy DIY video for coating jeans with Otter Wax on the-coveted.

If colored and/or waxed jeans are not your denim cup-of-tea, you should still check out ideeli's "denim divas" sale - they have 7 for All Mankind, Blue Lab reversible denim, Not Your Daughter's Jeans, as well as many other really awesome brands.

They also have this awesome BB Dakota sequin dress on sale too:

so just check out the sample sale already! If you don't yet have an "invite" (fancy way of saying I referred you), use mine: www.ideeli.com/invite/prillamon.

Literature Noir Sequin Jacket

Hi everyone! I'm letting go of an awesome piece at an awesome price, and I wanted to tell my readers about it because it's a pretty sweet deal and I want ya'll to know about it first.

Yea, it's pretty awesome.

You can see more pictures of this Literature Noir jacket here:

Right now, it's $20 on ebay. I bought it but never wore it; it's new without tags.

As you all probably know, I loooooooooooove sequins but have way too many sequin jackets than I know what to do with, so I have to let this one go. It will look great with a mini or with skinny jeans! It definitely has a "boyfriend fit" feel to it, so wear it with a belt for a more fitted look. Check it out if you're interested!

The Heroine Series: Wonder Woman 1

I'm excited to start a new, recurring feature on this site: The Heroine Series! You're probably like "girrrl, whatcha talkin' 'bout?" (or maybe not). As you may or may not know, I looove comics, anime, and video games, as well as grappling (judo, brazilian jiu jitsu). And it has bothered me my entire 27-year-old life that people put lady fighters in outfits like this:
I hope you like people seeing your vagina.

OK, seriously? That dress had best be held up by the power of the gods or Sophitia will be fighting naked. At least her shoes will still be on.

And while those are a couple of the many, MANY worst offenders, I am still very, VERY bothered by outfits like this:
Can someone tell me how this girl walks for miles on end, let alone BASES her legs for fighting enemies? Aeris's dress would have to be unbuttoned up to her crotch for her to be able to use her legs while fighting.

While most of the outfits are reasonable, this cat better be magical if she's acrobatic for hours in those heels. I mean, at best, a lady can run in heels for hours, not scale walls. Kitty, go get some sensible shoes! How are you outrunning Batman in that sheit?!

Now let's glance at their male counterparts:
Why doesn't Batman wear heels? Probably because he's a genius.

These guys look a bit more outfitted for some serious fighting. OK, maybe except the last guy. Someone needs to tell Zangief that isn't a real wrestling outfit.

Anyway, I digress. The Heroine Series will feature functional, yet stylish, outfits inspired by our favorite saving-the-day-and/or-night ladies. It CAN be done!

Today's outfit is inspired by (note, I said inspired by, not a recreation of) Wonder Woman's:
Can I get a little sparkle up in the hiz-ouse

Her outfit is actually fairly functional, except the straplessness of her bodysuit (and sometimes her boots have heels). I love the functionality and stylishness of her bodysuit, and her gold belt.

So, here's what I came up with:
Wassup!

I'm wearing a Motel bodysuit over shorts, Converse shoes, a Free People sheer skirt, and a Mettle Fair Trade gold belt. I'm wearing the bodysuit over shorts because, while I am not averse to panty flashing, I am averse to va-jay-jay flashing. Maybe Wonder Woman has a magical bodysuit that doesn't flash her goodies, but my bodysuit, which *unfortunately* is bound by the laws of physics, needs to be paired with shorts to keep my private areas... well, private.

This outfit allows for fantastic range of motion. I need to disclaim the following pictures: I am not versed in striking martial arts like taekwondo or wushu. Just the grappling martial arts judo and Brazilian jiu jitsu. So please excuse my sucky kicking.

Bam! There goes your face! Maybe.

Harai goshi practice. Hey, no laughing in judo.

Look ma, no flashing! Other important functional details are I can sweat as much as I want without ruining my outfit AND do a fair bit of traveling in my flat, comfy shoes.

If you're wondering about my belt, the answer is yes, it is freaking awesome. So awesome that it'll be featured in probably many other outfit posts, so I'll talk about it in more detail another day.

Really, it's a glammed-up version of what women actually wear in Olympic wrestling (as opposed to fake WWE wrestling):
Wrestling, Women's Freestyle 55kg match, Beijing 2008, credit london2012.com

Obviously, the last thing these ladies want to worry about is a boob pop or a crotch flash, and what they're wearing has proved to be pretty damn functional.

The only advice I'd offer would-be heroines who want to adapt this outfit as their own is to cut the skirt a bit shorter. I had to hold the skirt up while walking up stairs. I'm sure that won't be a problem - in the heroine world, shorter doesn't seem to ever be a problem!

So, there you have it! Wonder Woman, don't go cribbin my look. Or do. Whatevs. That was a lot for one post, so I'll leave it at that.

Don't mess.
